We both have the same philosophy when it comes to how we want to live our lives and that is:
To live without reservations, to explore, to expose ourselves and immerse ourselves in whatever we can because we believe that's how we grow as people. We learn by experiences and the more experiences we have, the more complete our lives become.
We want to have adventure but not just one (2 week vacation) adventure. We want our adventure to be sustainable; this WILL be our lifestyle.
The big house with the picket fence, the desk gig with the structured salary, the repetition, the consistency; it's not for us. We want something different. We want to let go of our safety nets and all those little reasons for not saying 'yes'.
So how are we making this happen for ourselves?
Some time ago, we bought a boat. We might be total idiots (you'll find out later). We think we got a pretty good deal *shrug*. The boat we bought is a 38' Nauticat. It's hasn't been in the water since the 80's and it's outlived 2 different owners who were in the process of restoring it. So, either it's cursed or 3rd time's the charm!
The game plan (at present) is to make it habitable, get it back in the water, and when the time comes and the stars align... we'll set sail and explore the world on our own terms.
Currently dry-docked in Scappoose, about 40 minutes from our home in Portland, Oregon, he stands proudly... unfinished... and full of possibilities. We are about a year into the refit and still have so much work ahead of us. SO MUCH WORK!
Who are we to do this?!
Well, Chris is super handy. He has loads of experience in remodeling. The guy built out three restaurants with commercial grade kitchens, managed them, and then sold them. Now he runs a crawlspace/drainage company where he gets very dirty and often comes home wearing cobwebs, dirt, and fiberglass. Chris's skills also include, bartering, bar tending, & having really great hair. He also has a library of different voices which make him wildly entertaining.
And then there's me, Kelly. I grew up in a barn, dashed off to college for a frivolous art degree, went back for an actual degree, and now I work as designer/drafter/permit specialist for a home building company. My hobbies include (but are not limited to): staring at a computer screen, being sucked into projects I don't have time for, and drinking plenty of water.
Together, we think we got this. Yeah, it's a lot to take on. It's incredibly daunting and there aren't that many days I would consider 'rewarding'.
But at the end of every day, we know that this is what we want, we know that this is how we want to spend the rest of our lives...
and we're hell bound on making it happen.
